I think it might... but they prolly used the older open pollinated corn that has a much more extensive root base.
and planted it on 3' centers.

My dad, who grew up on a farm, said they used to grow pole breans ON cornstalks.  They grew right up the stalks, and so they got a double crop from the dirt.  Anybody else heard of this?  I wonder about light availability for the beans and the soil requirements in terms of fertility. I have excellent soil as a result of horse manure, so my main question is light, and might this work?  Jerry in southern Indiana
