Probably the latter. That is, the bark of the
blackberry canes/grape vines is more resistant to heat damage. It's not
shading of the pipe that protects the plants. The pipes conduct heat very
well and can be too hot for skin, but the canes/vines touching it seem to
be happy. Hypothetically, I think you could just about fry an egg on the
pipe.
