That's interesting.  I buy both Golden Russet and Ashmeads Kernal around here (eastern MA) and I think of them as very different fruits.  Ashmeads is smaller, browner, less uniformly shaped and generally uglier as well as less productive.  It sometimes develops red cheeks under the russet, which somehow don't look very appealing.  It also is vastly superior in flavor.  I think of Golden Russet as a pleasant hard sweet apple, with nice flavor.  The ones I can buy are cosmetically nice, if you don't object to russeting.  It is something I buy a few of if they show up at the fruit stand.  In contrast, Ashmeads is my family's favorite apple, and we go to some trouble to get it.  It is intensely sweet, extremely tart, and has a nice apple flavor.  The aroma probably is similar to Golden Russet, although the overall experience of eating them is very different.  It's also a little harder and a lot crunchier than Golden Russet.  At least, that's my experience with the fruits available here.

I have 3 Golden Russet type trees.  One is an American Golden Russet, the other English Golden Russet, and the third being Ashmead’s Kernal.  They are very similar.  The English Golden is a larger apple with less dark russeting.  The Ashmead’s Kernal is a large rangy tree that produces less fruit.  I am an organic apple grower and all three take a beating from disease and insects.  Not a good organic fruit!  I have better organic fruit from Empire, Chieftain, and Paragon.  The warm fall is ripening my Fugi very well and they are developing a great taste.  Judson L. Tanis Cuff has at least two clones of Golden Russet--one she claims is distinclty superior to the other.  My Golden Russet (from the late, lamented Bear Creek) matches the description of her inferior clone exactly--willowy growth and all.  BTW Tanis---the Lowville (sp?) you gave me grew beautifully over the summer.  Thanks.

I read some time back about the possibility of having several different golden russet strains out there. What nursery has the best or true one? Same with albermarle pippen. THANKS!!   skip s  zone 5
