I've long observed varying susceptibility to summer fungus in even equally late ripening varieties. Shiny skin seems to hold less moisture or in some other way reduce infection. Winesap is much cleaner than Baldwin although they are close in season, for example and Winesap has that shiny sheen that even a clean Baldwin lacks. As far as AFM, it seems they are drawn to early ripening varieties as well as whatever is reddest at the time of their emergence.
