Sounds like a loquat to me. I've heard there are varieties with large fruit.

Oops. Additional info I left out - my friend says the tree/bush is about 15
ft tall.

I have a friend in central AL, who emailed me with a request for
identification of a plant that I'm not familiar with.

Not sure where she's found this thing - I'll have to get more info;

Has a dark green leaf that looks somewhat like Chinese chestnut - without
any significant serrations on the edges.

Fruit appears to be the size of a peach or tangerine, has a smooth orange
surface. She says the pulp has the consistency of a peach, but is somewhat
sour, and she's displayed 4 brown seeds which look very much like
buckeyes(Aesculus spp.) to me.

Any ideas?

I can send the photo, if anyone would care to see it.
