Betsy,

We've used flame weeding.  You shouldn't literally be burning up the plants, but just applying enough flame to make them wither.  If they are burning up either things are too dry and you shouldn't be doing it (far away from a hose) or you are overzealous.  It is satisfying to see plants that you hate or fear withering up before your very eyes, but unless you have plants that are on the verge of making viable seeds it probably isn't any more effective than the vinegar.  Since it doesn't kill the roots, you will need to come back for multiple applications.

I have unwanted plants growing in an environmentally sensitive area and
do not wish to use conventional herbicides. I tried spaying white
vinegar this past weekend, and found the plantain and dock withered
beautifully, but the fescue gave a slightly annoyed sigh.

Any recommendations for a relatively nontoxic herbicide effective for
perennial grasses?
