Beekeeping is a great hobby, but a poor business. Short and simple. There's no way to justify it financially, or any other way. I don't golf anymore, and I don't spend much time in the bars or on the streets, so I keep bees....
It is just a lot of fun watching them. I'm told ag chems are more a problem than suburb toxins. Neighbors with swimming pools might be a consideration. If you're interested, find a local beekeeper and get a tag-along look at beekeeping. They'll be thrilled to show you the ropes.
FYI, it just became legal to keep bees in the Bronx! You'd be amazed at where/how bees are kept.
Have fun!!!
Tim
It seems like a lot of work, and I have plenty of free (no money, no labor) pollination from bumblebees. Also, I live on a third of an acre in the suburbs, and wonder if my neighbors' yard chemicals might be bad for bees and/or the quality of the honey.
I do enjoy honey bees, though. Maybe I'll give it a try after the kids go off to college.
