The English Daily Mail article points out that no one has said how the GM tomato tastes or if its vitamin content is lessened.

It also says, "Genetically modified food is not banned in Britain, provided it is clearly labelled and undergoes rigorous tests. But supermarkets so far refuse to stock it because of public concern over safety."

A few years ago an initiative was placed on the Oregon ballot saying that genetically modified food would have to have a line on the label informing consumers.

An early poll show about 70 percent of voters in favor of the measure. But then the big food distributors started pouring in money against it - the most money in that election, as I recall - and it was voted down. The distributors said they would go broke if they had to provide this information.

But I can pick up a can of Coke and read if it has caffeine or not. And I can pick up a can of soup and read how much sodium it has. No one has gone broke providing information on Coke, soup, or thousands of other edible items.

So this information is hidden from U.S. customers, while in Britain the GM food must be clearly labeled.
