Yes, we're very lucky, whether we know it or not. This Mediterranean style climate is only available in 4 regions of the world that I know of, all relatively small.

   Thanks for all the info. We have hit a few of the botanical gardens. We are actually staying in Saratoga just minutes away from Hakone. The garden as a whole didnt blow me away but some of the plant material did.Very old and establish specimens. Filoli is closed to visitors until sometime in feb. We are going to call. My freind from NM who we have met up with is wanting to get some various scion wood while here.
   In general I am always impressed when I come to this area. You can have Citrus and plums and apples.... all growing in the same area. Plus it seems like the easiest place to eat locally year round.Even an average farmers market would thrill most mid-westerners. You have everything  here including several million people too many. Fun to visit.
