I've encountered a few recommendations of an ornamental cultivar that
has been around for at least a few decades as useful for fruit: "Boule
de Feu (Fireball?)." The person who sticks in my mind is the late
Lawrence Hills of England writing 30-40 years ago. He was a very
experienced and knowledgeable horticulturist.

I've always enjoyed the flowers of flowering quince, and wanted to try the
fruit, so I'm thinking of planting one or two. Which varieties? I find
intriguing articles like this about breeding programs to produce better
fruiting cultivars:

but can't find any actual new cultivars available.
