I looked into shisandra a little more online. The variety sold by Jung's is
'Eastern Prince". From what I saw online it is from the Vavilov Institute in
Russia. I was not able to determine if they had developed it or just found it
and added it to their collection. It is the only variety of
self-pollinating schisandra chinensis that I could locate online. I didn't
look into the flowering of the other members of the genus. However, there
were some differing statements on whether this plant had both male and female
flowers, or perfect flowers. I have never actually examined the flowers of
Eastern Prince, it being a bit lower on the priority list than a few other
things I grow, but I think Jim Fruth is right with the perfect flowers. I
cannot recall any variation among its flowers over the past four years. It
would seem more likely that a dioecious plant species would more likely end
up with separate male and female flowers rather than perfect flowers, but not
impossible. The perfect flower is definitely preferable. I will take a
closer look this coming growing season. Some of the nurseries may need to
take a closer look as well. Thanks for your observations Jim F.
I have my seeds from this past season breaking dormancy but from what the
literature says, germinating the seeds is slow and erratic process.
Christmas Day it rained all day over here.
