Excuse my ignornace, but pawpaws are ripe when they drop? I've got a pair of ripe pawpaw fruit for the first time ever, but I really doubt they'll ripe before the freezes...

Richard,
Others have asked me that question - I have no good answer. Most of my 12 trees were ones I selected from the wild along creek bottoms in a 4 county area around here. My "Ebert" tree starts to drop fruit about 3 days before the others - usually about August 20 - it gets the longest direct sun - about 10am until dark. All of the trees still have 15-30 fruit on them. One year the last couple fruit dropped during an October 2 rainstorm, but usually the season ends about Sept 24.
