Deb:

For SE Ohio (near as difficult as S. Indiana) I'd suggest you use any of the OHxF series of stocks and/or Calleryana for an understock for pear.

Varieties could well include the following.

1. Collette - Excellent quality, moderate resistance to fireblight, etc.
2. Magness/Warren - Excellent quality (in some years as good as Collette or better), excellent resistance to fireblight and self infertile (needs a pollinator variety)
3. Ambrosia - Great quality, great size, good fireblight resistance and quick to bear.
4. Green Jade - Good quality, fully matures (ripens) on the tree, flowers very cold hardy (resists spring time frosts, etc.).
5. Honeysweet - Good quality, (milder and larger version of Seckel), smallish tree, good FB resistance.
6. Olympic - Asian pear of excellent quality (when fully mature), great FB resistance

     Hope this helps.

I am interested in what root stocks to use for fireblight resistance.  I've struggled with pears here in SE Ohio.  I know they grow here as a neighbor has three trees that produce well (neighbor doesn't know what the trees are...they pre-exist him).

All the trees I've had trouble with were on dwarfing stock.  I'm ready to try standards.  Any suggestions on root stock and varieties?  Thanks.
