But is that necessarily a bad thing? In other words, would it negatively affect the rest of the tree? If the new growth is killed, you are back where you started and presumably no worse off than if you didn't prune at all, but yet have a head start on the pruning. I'm asking, not advising; because I don't know. I've always wondered about this but have never seen it addressed in any literature.

Main problem with pruning this late in your summer is it will stimulate new growth which won't have time to harden off and will lead to a good bit of winter-kill on the new growth.
