The problem is probably something -- and insect or disease -- attacking old stems. This plant is naturally a bush and is not programmed to have long-lived trunks. As wood gets older it becomes more susceptible to such attacks. Cutting back old wood next spring and letting younger wood replace older stems often solves the problem.
