Maybe it's not Bt. I'm at a loss to explain it any other way. The tent caterpillers that plagued me for years disappeared completely (good riddance) an the only ones I see now are the yellow swallowtail larvae. They are always dead and I don't put anything even remotely toxic near the garden. It all happened after I sprayed Bt. I found the can in the shed and it clearly says "contains live bacteria."
Regardless I don't think the ones in the can were active or living any longer, so i felt no qualms about discarding it in a landfill.

If the Bt bacteria has really spread all over your garden, why is it so much more sucessful than other bacteria? What does the Bt eat, and why don't native bacteria compete for that food source?
I tend to think that if someone could produce a live bacteria product that would eradicate caterpillars for years, the world would (unwisely) beat a path to their door.
I used it for cabbage moths last year, and they came back every time it rained. I also use the mosquito toxic bt in my rain barrels, and it only lasts a week. ( I use the small pellets, not the dunks)

Not really sure. there aren't many around these days. they always turn up dead. They used to be in everything before I sprayed the Bt.

How can you tell that the caterpillars are dying from Bt?
