On the bright side, at least some of the seedlings from the seedlings should be virtually identical to the grandparent hybrid plant. Just in case you might want to try breeding.

Thanks, Richard. That's about what I
feared.

Unfortunately Wonderful is a hybrid of several different varieties as evidenced by its fruit characteristics. So you could get anything from your seedlings from very sorry, small, sour fruit to fairly good fruit. That is why most pomegranates are propagated by cuttings. Now, if you had an old world variety like Kandahar (from Afghanistan) that is known to have existed for over 1000 years then a seedling from that plant should be fairly similar to the mother plant.A researcher at the University of California tested Wonderful variety seedlings many years ago (in the 1920s) and found that the seedlings varied a lot and most were not very good.Regards,Richard AshtonOak Creek Orchard----- Original Message -----From: Bob KellySent: Monday, June 08, 2009 11:53 AMSubject: [NAFEX] Pomegranate SeedlingsI notice several seedling plants around my pomegranate tree. It is a 'Wonderful' I think.Does anyone know or have a feel for what I might expect from the seedlings if grown? I usually root cuttings to give away, but was wondering if the seedlings might be good.Bob KellyZone 7b/8aNortheast MississippiNortheast Mississippi
