Alan, you and Anton made me wonder the reason for
the fall spray. After a little internet search, it refreshed my
memory. As I recall, mites enter the bud scales in the fall,
where they are protected from spray. The idea is to get a good
kill before that. I suppose the spring spray is a
cleanup. That said, I might try just a spring spray and see what
happens.

I wouldn't bother spraying trees when half defoliated.
The mites are unreachable with oil or poison once they enter the leaves so I
think the best time to oil them is right before bud break- works for me.
