It's believable to me that there's a shortage. Not only has interest in edible gardening been rising for the past 5 years, but the economic depression has made that interest go into overdrive. And the media has picked up on it, which means more articles and TV segments about edible gardening which reach even more people. The good news for organizations like NAFEX and CRFG is that we can increase our membership if we reach out to these new gardeners.

Drove 180 miles round trip to a nursery yesterday to buy Evans

Didn't buy any, too expensive. Supposedly, there is a fruit tree
shortage.  Sounds like the gas shortage or the past coffee shortage
or past sugar shortage.  Massive inflation is coming.  $20.00 loaf of
bread?
