Hi Derry and others,

Windmill Point Farm in Quebec carries a stunning, large, very dark red
fleshed apple called "Purple Passion" that I am very excited to have now own
two trees of. They seem to be really hardy as both mine made it through last
winter's -45C with no die back at all. I've tasted "Purple Passion" and it
is definitely for juicing/jelly: the juice is on the tart side and the flesh
is not so much melting as it is inedible cellulose that you just can't eat!

Canada's Clonal Genebank (contact Margie Luffman) has a great collection of
red fleshed apples. Just off the top of my head I can think of Geneva,
Geneva Crab, Crab 6, Shelley, Wisley, and Scugog that they carry.

I also have a couple of "All Purple Jason Jansen" apples which has been given
a new name that I need to track down. They also seem hardy, but mine are
only a foot or so tall so it'll be a few years before I can share budwood.

If you have of any others that you would be willing to share/trade budwood
for next spring, please let me know. I fell in love with red fleshed apples
when I saw "Purple Passion" at a Fruit Grower's Festival at the Devonian
Botanic Gardens a few years ago and now I'm trying to collect every one I can
find with the idea of breeding a cold hardy red-fleshed apples that is good
for eating (yes, I know that is a lofty goal even for a 36 year old!).
