some varieties really cover themselves in bloom that is when we are
very grateful
for chemical thinning sprays
when we thin, we dont thin to the largest
fruit (king blossom)in the varieties that produce very large fruits,
especially in
a year that has fewer blooms on the tree (some varieties are very
alternate bearing)
in those, i thin to a medium sized fruit in the cluster in hopes of
producing a medium
sized apple, not some giant size 48 this is especially true for
honeycrisp and braeburns as the larger fruits in these varieties tend
to have more post harvest issues (bitterpit, internal browning, harder
to sell giant fruits)
also, we thin to only one fruit in the cluster and allow lots of
space inbetween clusters for maximum sun exposure
