My experience with ranetka versus antonovka in zone three has been taht ranetka grows faster in light soil. Ranetka will survive 40 plus below w/out snow whereas antonovka will not survive if roots dry out (usually meaning no snow) at 40 below. (its upper branches and trunk are hardy to -50 though).
Ranetka starts growth 10 days earlier than antonovka but does not impart this early growth on its grafts.
Ranetka also goes dormant about 10 days later and again, this doesn't seem to affect the cultivars grafted to it.
Ranekta has been compatible with all stock I have used on it (perhaps 50 different varieities).. It is said to be incompatible with Rescue Crab but I have an 8 year old tree on Rescue that is doing fine.
I would donate a few rootstocks to you Dell, but I couldn't get them to you until late April.

Subject: [NAFEX] Canadian seedling apples

If you are a Canadian resident that has a wild seedling apple tree that you feel is of exceptional quality and merits propagation and possible distribution , please contact me. We are interested in saving these one of a kind specimens.
If necessary, we can instruct you on collecting and shipping budwood to us for the August grafting season. The original grower can name the apple, or we can enter it into our 'name the apple' event at our fall apple festival when fruit is available.
Particularly interested in redflesh and northern cold hardy types.
