The thread so far:

Anthony,

I haven't grown many trees on '97, but in my limited experience, it
produces a vigorous tree which is blight-resistant and productive. I
grew Meigetsu on this stock. A nice butterscotch color and a ripe
watermelon flavor when fully ripened. Some decent aromatics for an
Asian pear, too.

the OHxF 97 rootstock. Does anyone have experience with it or have
another to recommend. We are planning on pruning for size. We have
Hosui, Chojuro, Shinseiki, and Giant Korean. Are there others anyone
would recommend ?

El Conejo Suave chimes in with:

I have no idea why anyone would want to grow a pear on OHXf 97, do you need a
shade tree for ecological reasons?

In Chicagoland OHxF 333 and 282 are, in general, superior choices. Both are
well anchored and drought tolerant, yet they keep the tree at a manageable
size (282 is more vigorous where I am, but not obnoxiously so).

Most of those Asians are not blight resistant, and given your weather and
climate you are risking a heck of an outbreak of fireblight. More, in your
are, there are several strains of fireblight, and guess what some of the
resistant varieties fail to wall it off. Magness in particular comes to mind
as one fireblight ravages around here, where as Harvest Queen, Harrow sweet,
and Harrow Delight, Potomac, Atlantic Queen, Rescue among others appear
unaffected.

In short 97 is vigorous, and you are in an area that is hot and humid, with
violent storms that equated to great conditions for fireblight. The last
thing you want is a vigorous rootstock to exasperate your problem (unless you
are growing in pure clay, then it may be a good choice) and to have a tree
too tall to monitor.

Good luck with your grafting...

the fluffy one
