A friend of mine gets hundreds of pounds of coffee grounds from Larry's Coffee Beans, including the skins of the beans, which are loaded with caffeine and never get brewed.  There are plenty of insects and worms in the compost, and the chickens eat the critters with no ill effects from the caffeine.

I do think that caffeine from our sewer system is a problem in rivers.

Coffee grounds are a high nitrogen feedstock for compost, but the caffeine is problematic. I find that growing oyster mushrooms in them first seems to alleviate the caffeine problem and provides an extra crop of delicious food while initiating the breakdown into humus.

What do you guys think of coffee grounds as compost, particularly as an acid acidifier?  I have for a long time used ours but I just noticed our local Starbucks has them by the garbage bag full free for gardners and I would like to use them, particularly as I have a number of blueberry plants and my soil, despite all my attempts, is still not in the ph range it should be for blueberries.  jerry in southern Indiana
