Mark, I often notice aphids on my corn tassels. Sometimes wasp and hornet related insects arrive to use these aphids for food.
I have no idea what your black bees are but I'm wondering if you looked close enough to be completely sure they are bees and not something more related to hornets and yellow jackets.
If those same black bees pollinate your fruit trees, that is good evidence that they are bees. Having said that, I have seen wasps working over the plum blossoms along side the bees, so everything on the flowers are not necessarily bees.
