- Subject: [NAFEX] Captan use on pears
- Date: Tue, 20 Jan 2009 17:08:05 -0600
Mark Angermayer and I have been dialoguing on the
use of captan on pears and the fact that the commercial label does not list
pears. below is what I discovered this morning that I was not previously
aware of and felt I needed to share it with the rest of the group.
<"This is interesting....the Ohio State
Bulletin "Controlling Diseases and Insects in Home Fruit Plantings" that I
received at our Specialty Growers Conference from one of the speakers includes
Captan in it's chart that you can see at http://ohioline.osu.edu/b780/pdf/Table7.pdf.
The Michigan State Bulletin was for Home Growers also. I also know that
the Bonide "Fruit Tree Spray" contains captan and is labeled for pears.
What might be happening is that it is labeled for "home" use, but not
"commercial" use. It very well could be that the rate for "home" use is
different than for "commercial" use.
I did find the following info about commercial
use in the April 9, 2008 issue of the University of Tennessee Fruit Pest
News:
3. Fungicides for Pears
We don't have a pear industry in the Southeast sufficient to justify the production of a spray schedule. However, there are a few trees, and some growers have noticed that the captan label does not include pears. This registration was lost as a result of the special review for this product. Captan is a very valuable fruit fungicide considering its broad spectrum of control and its freedom from resistance concerns. What should you use in its place on pears? Commercial growers have several options -- Ziram, Topsin M, and the strobilurin products Sovran, Flint, and Pristine are broad-spectrum fungicides that would be suitable for use on pears during the spring or summer. Ferbam is also labeled but is not sold in Tennessee. Scala, Vangard, Procure, Rubigan, and mancozeb can be used during the spring, when the primary target would be pear scab. Mancozeb and maneb are sold in small containers for homeowner use, but cannot be used on home fruit trees. For home pear trees, copper and sulfur would be the only fungicide choices. (SB) Looks like it has been removed from the commercial label but not the home use label."> Dennis Norton
