Doreen,
Hidden Springs lists 5 varieties. Can you tell what you chose to start with
and will you try the others? Under the same snow just down the road from you..
Thank you, Anthony

Many of my favorite apples are russets, and I never met a russet I
didn't like. Here are ones that have fruited for me, roughly in order
of how interested I am in them now.

Swayzie - this apple is supposedly similar to Pomme Gris. I have not
gotten many fruits but the few have been excellent. Here are my notes
this year: more interesting than Roxbury. Not as dry and has a
pleasant flavor, a cross between a "nutty" (Egremont) and an
"aromatic" (Freyburg).

Pitmaston Pineapple - Taste is excellent, more flavor than Egremont
Russet. Needs to mellow off the tree for a bit. Has more sugars than
other russets. Roxbury Russet I would call similar, but PP is ahead
of RR - more sugars/sours and more flavor. Small size is the primary
detraction here.

Golden Nugget - Sweet rich and mellow. This is the earliest russet I
have, mid-August, which gives me a higher appreciation for it.

Egremont Russet - This apple is not as sour as most of the other
russets and has an interesting nutty taste. The flesh is a bit dry.

Roxbury Russet - it excels at the sweet/sour flavor. I have never
noticed any strange flavor in it, it is always a good apple and a very
good cropper as well.

Talk about Chieftain please. Is there a mail-order source for it?

I have grown American Golden Russet, English Golden Russet, Ashmead's
Kernel, Hudson's Golden Gem, St. Edmund's Russet, Fall Russet, Roxbury
Russet, and Zabergau Rennet. My favorite is probably Ashmead's Kernel and
American Golden Russet. Roxbury Russet did not do well here. It seemed to
be like Swaar, a highly rated apple that did not do well in our climate.
None of them are great low care apples as they suffer from insects in an
organic orchard. The St. Edmund's apple (since lost) was a summer apple
here and usually was a very short season as was the Fall Russet. With the
hot summers of SW Iowa, most summer and early fall apples do not do well.
This year we had a cool summer and fall so the early apples actually lasted
longer and tasted better. I like to use my apples for drying and most of
the russets are my most flavorful dried apples. Zabergau Rennet tends to
brown in drying as I do not put anything on my apples when I slice them
before drying. They are still flavorful and it is easier to fill a tray for
drying with large apples. I do not care for the flavor for fresh eating of
Zabergau Rennet. Hudson's Golden Gem tastes like a pear in our climate. It
usually has a short season so I just eat it fresh. I know the russets were
known for long term keeping but I find that apples with a slick skin like
Chieftain or Paragon keep better for me. Judson L. Frisk zone 5 SW Iowa.

My favorite russet is Ashmead's Kernel. The fruit is hard, has an elegant
sweet, spice flavor palate, stores well and is relatively disease tolerant.
I bag apples, so the apple rust doesn't bother the fruit. My tree, on Bud 9,
bore 2-1/2 bushels this October. The tree is four years old. I also have
Pitsmaston Pineapple and don't like it as much as Ashmead's. Pitsmaston
softens in storage and doesn't have the complexity of flavors that Ashmead's
has.

Just my 2 cents worth,

I got 2 plants from Hidden Springs. One of them bloomed the next year,
though I got no crop (2007 freeze). This the 2nd year I got a few berries.
I put them into some apple wine, but also put some in my mouth. I just
pressed the juice out of them with my tongue, and they had a nice but elusive
flavor. Reminded me a little bit of wild black cherry. I am thinking of
putting in more. When I asked people familiar with the jellies Hector's wife
makes, some said Aronia was their favorite, others liked it mixed with other
flavors. No one said they disliked it. The bush is quite attractive, with
shiny leaves. The berries are large enough to be worth picking, which I am
sure is important to Jim. Donna

Tetraploids generally produce larger fruit. The "Brilliantissima" variety
of the red Aronia I got from a landscaping nursery made small berries.

Living in east TN about 25 years ago I kept hearing people talk about the
old 'Rusty Coat' apple and how much they liked them. I never got my hands
on one till we visited Jeff Poppen's place one fall and he had some from a
tree he'd grafted. They were awful. He said he only knew one person who
liked them. Maybe he'd only found a seedling from one of the real thing.
