I suspect the acorn shortage is probably due to the lingering drought we're suffering in the mid-atlantic region. 6 of the last 10 years here have been drought years.  The trees need a break.

Yes.  They mention in the article that while large areas back East are having acornless years, other parts are having fine crops.
