I was in Kentucky in October, and the oak trees in the Lexington cemetery had a bumper crop of acorns.  Most I've ever seen, in fact.  So the phenomenon isn't universal.

I remember this was mentioned on list a couple months ago.  Treehugger (a really good environmental blog) just linked to a WaPo article on the subject.  Other people are speculating, including scientists.
