Alan,
So I take it from what you said that you didn't pick the pears and put them
in cold storage before you ripened them? The later ripening pears have
been a puzzle for me. I think I have the ripening process down for the
earlier pears but not for the later ripening or winter pears.
Thanks,

Subject: [NAFEX] Harrowsweet pear
I have been growing a few Harrowsweet pear trees in my nursery for years
but always sold them before they started fruiting and have never been on any
site when this variety is ripe. While I was doing inventory today I
noticed a few pears on one tree and tried one- it was very sweet and quite
delicious- kind of like a cross between Comice and Bosc or just a less
grainy version of Bosc.
I'm in zone 6 and all my other pears are long gone from the trees so I'm
pretty excited by this pear both for its flavor and time of cropping. Of
course it's always dangerous to get overly enthusiastic about a tree from its
first tiny showing. I'm sure a few of you out there have more experience
with this one and I welcome your thoughts.
