With red and black raspberries, I have occasionally had a variety that normally bears on 2nd-year canes put out berries on primocanes. It seems to depend on the spring or summer weather. This year only the red variety did it (Rossanna). I suspect this is what happened with your blackberry.
By the way, there is a primocane-bearing blackberry called Prime Jan. My first-year plant flowered a week ago.

Jerry queries thusly:
My triple Crown blackberries produce large crops of berries every
summer. Suddenly one is bearing really nice fall berries, ripe now. Has anyone else experienced the same? Could this be a seedling from random fruit that dropped?
My reply:
I have some mouth ready right now. While it is possible mine grew from seed also it also seems unlikely we would both be experiencing such randomness at the same time in two separate locations. In addition it is form more than one plant.
