For the past 2 planting seasons (April) we have
added around 2,000 new trees and our spacing ahs been 4' x 14'. We are
training all of our new trees (now approx. 4,000) tot he tall spindle
system. Some call it the super spindle, where the spacing is 3' to 4'
between trees and 10' between rows, just enough space to get equipment down the
row. We are using Bud9, M9 and M26 rootstocks. Our previous M7 and
M111 trees were space 10', 12', and 14'. The 12 and 14 foot spacing is
best, as Alan suggests. But with the newer tall spindle system, we can get
many more trees tot he acre and they require minimal pruning. A photo can
be seen at http://www.theorchardkeeper.blogspot.com/ which
was taken in Italy where the system is widely used.
