Hi All,
There is a book called 'Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants' by Steve Brill & Evelyn Dean. In it is a recipe for boiled poke greens, and a caveat that you should not try this out without the supervision of someone more experienced. You boil young greens in three changes of water before eating.
Another reference: Sloan-Kettering hospital has a website about herbs, botanicals, etc. which lists the active ingredients, uses, references, etc. for individual herbs.
http://www.mskcc.org/mskcc/html/11570.cfm. If this URL doesn't come through the mail intact, you can go to www dot mskcc dot org and search for the section titled, "About Herbs, Botanicals & Other Products". The website recommends avoiding all consumption of this plant.
Poke, aka Phytolacca americana grows at the back of my yard............I don't think the rabbits or deer eat it, either!
