I believe you are talking about pokeweed which has numerous dark
purple berries. It was common in West Virginia when I lived there.
My wife comes from West Virginia but she doesn't know of anyone
eating pokeweed greens. Pokeweed contains a number of poisons. My
wife thinks people in southern West Virginia might eat pokeweed
greens. If you boil pokeweed you could get rid of some poison but I
don't know if you could get rid of all the poison.
