One of the other pathologists who worked with me 10 years or so ago lived in a nice residential neighborhood just a couple of blocks from the lab. Raccoons were raiding his koi pond, so he embarked on a trapping vendetta. Over an 18 month period, he caught over 125 of the rascals.
As has been previously noted, in some states relocation of trapped wildlife - including raccoons - is prohibited, and any wildlife biologist will tell you straight up that it's a bad idea, both for the relocated animal, as well as the population already in existence at the site of relocation.
People would like to think that they're being kind, but in many instances, relocation results in a slow, lingering death due to starvation and competition from the established resident population into which they've dumped this 'new' animal - not to mention that an 'urban' racoon may not be especially adept at surviving 'in the wild'.
Far better for all concerned to dispatch troublesome raccoons, rabbits, etc. rapidly and humanely with a bullet.

Hi Alan,
I'm with you 100%. A columnist for the local paper wrote of catching raccoons at her house in town and having them safely removed to the country. If they were dumped in my back yard they are less safe than if kept in town. I too shoot them, use 22 CB shorts. My neighbors also destroy them. Maybe we should catch and release them in the middle of town!
I wrote a letter to the editor of the paper asking her to in the future dispatch them to raccoon heaven where they can enjoy cookies and marshmallows forever.
Jerry
PS. 22 caliber CB shorts have a low report.
