Also, I saw photos (somewhere) of structures that used cut sections of Phragmites, a plentiful invasive that grows a lot around New England, and everywhere else I think.

Why buy beehouses? I put a 5/16" bit into my portable drill motor and
drilled holes in fence posts and lots of other non-structural, permanent
wood. The wild bees like it just fine.
As a curiosity, I drilled some treated timbers (the green ones that
contain arsenic) and the only insect that uses these holes is the some kind
of wasp.
