I drilled pieces of plastic 4x4 and the bees have been using those for many years. The "timber" is made of recycled plastic and sold for outdoor decks.

Why buy beehouses? I put a 5/16" bit into my portable drill motor and
drilled holes in fence posts and lots of other non-structural, permanent
wood. The wild bees like it just fine.
As a curiosity, I drilled some treated timbers (the green ones that
contain arsenic) and the only insect that uses these holes is the some kind
of wasp.
