There is a lot of gratuitous pH tester bashing going on. So I'd like to
defend my little pH tester (let's call him pHil.) Joking aside, I bought it
just a few weeks ago (it's a Hanna). I bought a couple of known test
solutions along with it as well as some storage solution for the probe (they
say the probe must be kept wet in the proper storage solution). It has two
calibration points. Anyway, out of the box, it has been spot on. Measured
a known 7.01ph solution at around 7.00. Measured a 4.01pH solution at
around 4.00 (it jumps around a few hundredths). The water company that
supplies our tap water says they try to keep the pH at around 9.4. The
tester tested it at 9.35. Lemon juice (Real (fake) lemon juice) tested at
about 2.8 as did a cola.

I was going to use just plain old pH test paper, but some extension websites
warned against it saying test paper can vary by as much as 1 to 2 points on
pH. So far I've been very pleased with the accuracy of the tester.
