From Advances in Fruit Breeding edited by Janick and Moore, Purdue University Press, 1975:
Plums by John H. Weinberger is a short survey of plum development worldwide, packed with information, with a good bibliography. Here is an excerpt:
(Burbank) imported P. salicina seedlings from Japan in 1884 and 1885. Several selections from them were named and introduced, including 'Burbank', 'Abundance' and 'Satsuma'. Later he made crosses between P. salicina and other species .... His 'Santa Rosa' cultivar which contains a mixture of P. salicina, P. simonii and P. americana ....
