Toni,
I got my antique apple varieties, all on Bud 9 rootstock (8 ft. and under mature size) from Kevin Bradley of this listserv. He has a list of what he sells at www.edibleforest.com

Kevin is in the Madison, WI area, which is Zone 4.

The Ashmead's Kernel I got from Kevin produced four apples the second year in the ground. This year (third season), the tree is loaded. Also have fruit on the Honey Crisp I got from him. Sops of Wine on Bud 9 (first year in the ground, planted last summer) has one apple.

Another great apple is Pixie Crunch, developed by Purdue for home growers. Ed Fackler can tell you about it. I bought one from Henry Field's, I think, or it may have been Stark Bros. Just Google Pixie Crunch apple for sources. It matures at about 12 feet and is precocious. I had two apples mature the first year in the ground, and it's also loaded this third season. Apples are small--lunch box size is how they are advertised. But, the tree is resistant to many diseases and is VERY low maintenance. The branches naturally spread and grow horizontal to the ground. It's the only apple or Asian pear I haven't had to train with weights and tie-downs.

Hope some of this info helps.

So far I have had one apple from my trees. After waiting until they
were old enough I did get one apple last year. Then a hard freeze and
the rabbits pruned them to a 4 ft. trunk. The apple and peach have
survived.........But I think I will plant a multiple variety apple
tree. Which one do I want for zone 4?

I have not had good luck with the nectarines from Gurney's/Henry
Field. I still would like to plant a couple but I'd like to have them
live more than two years. Where should I buy from next?
