Gene Wild well known NAFEX member sent me the following in reply:

There is a symbiotic combination of a nematode + blue-green algae which is spread by a beetle.  I forget whether it is a pine shoot beetle or a pine bark beetle.  It plugs up tubes in the tree that transport liquid.  Once the symptoms show there is no remedy.  Native pines are rather immune to it, but foreign pines are quite susceptible.  I lost a Scotch pine from that 40 yrs ago in Indianapolis.  Many are still dying in this area.
