Hi Keith,
It may depend the herbicide. Our ground
had tons of earthworms every year. There was surprisingly little herbicide
used. Just before planting, the weeds were "burned down" with Round
up. The corn or beans were then drilled in with a no till drill.
There may have been a pre-emergence herbicide included in with the seed,
but whenever I helped the guy fill his drill, we only filled it with seed.
Generally the corn or beans came up very fast to start shading out the weeds and
no further herbicide was needed. There would obviously be a few sunflowers
and things in with the crops, but in all, the fields were fairly clean.
Later, when Round up ready beans came on the scene, the farmer would spray the
beans once with Round up, and the fields were VERY clean. I would add one
other caveat to this. That is, I was a pig farmer, and we irrigated a
significant amount of lagoon water on the fields. Man talk about some good
stuff. That stuff would make crops grow on concrete.
Compare this to our adjoining neighbor. He
would work and work the ground (in the fall and spring), then plant, and he
still had to spray his beans. Not only was there a lot more fuel, time,
and equipment expense going over those fields, but you could literally watch the
fields erode from year to year. Obviously yields moved in
correlation.
