I think this may be one of those cases where local conditions make a huge difference. We grow a row of Royaltys here and find them to have excellent flavor fresh if picked at just the right time (underripe or overripe they are indeed not pleasant). We bought a few plants from a different supplier and they appear to be a different strain, one fruiting the end of June (with fewer larger drupelets) and the other mid-July. Not sure which is the "true" Royalty and which is a royal pretender.

Has anyone ever tasted a Purple Raspberry that was delicious?
I raise black raspberries and red raspberries that are in close
proximity to each other. The bees mix the pollen and the birds plant the
seed. Consequently, I get a couple purple raspberry seedlings most every
year. I like to raise seedlings to maturity just to see what I get and
every purple raspberry I've sampled tastes a little like stale wine.

Steve, I agree that Royalty is not good eaten fresh; in fact I find it
downright nasty. However, I think Royalty makes some of the best purple
raspberry jam and ice cream topping I've ever eaten. -- Sam Brungardt
