Murph,

Like Amada, I have used wooden ones. I've also used plastic ones purchased
from Gurneys. With the wooden ones I cut a "V", but you have to bevel the
backside a little, or it cuts into the branch too much for my liking.
Whether plastic spreaders or wooden, I keep them in the tree, by wrapping
with a small amount of electrical tape. I'm always afraid the electrical
tape will girdle the branch (Murphy's law at work) so I check them
frequently.
