I stopped being 'nice' to click beetles when I went to harvest my melons a couple of years ago. Every melon had burrows on their bottom with click beetle larva inside. Now, when I grow melons, when the green fruit is about tennis ball size, I place it in a plastic ice cream bucket (upright or on its side). That solves the click beetle damage.
