Hi Jerry,
Well, this is a little embarrassing, but I think I
may know part of the reason the grafted buds are growing so slowly.
They're not vegetative buds. They're going to flower. A few
days ago I thought they looked a little like they were going to open into a
cluster, but I dismissed it because I was certain I grafted vegetative
buds. Last summer when I grafted the buds, I'm positive I took them
from current season's growth. I'm not a horticulturist, but at least I can
tell current growth from year old wood.
I don't get how cherry fruiting buds can form on
last seasons growth. I thought it took two years for cherry fruit
buds. What is stranger is that this is way past the season for any prunus
to flower. But maybe it's because I forced the buds by cutting the
trunk off. Maybe the weird weather this spring had something to do
with it as well. There is a blueberry-you-pick south of us. They've
been in business 28 years and this is the first year they will not have
blueberries. Definitely not normal.
