Hello,

I had the privilege of seeing a Howgate Wonder apple tree at the Canadian
Clonal Genebank. The size of the apple was amazing. The Howgate Wonder is
the sort of thing where you cannot believe your eyes.

A single one of these apples could make two apple pies handily.

The flavor was good, but not outstanding. Of the dozens of apples I tasted
that day Richelieu was by far the best eating apple.

The last time I saw the tree at the genebank it was in need of replacement
due to fireblight damage.

If you want apples that make people do a double take; Howgate Wonder is your
apple. It is a true novelty.

Later,
Tom

Hélène,

Crawford lists Howgate Wonder as a cooking apple: large, round-conical,
pale green flushed brownish red, striped red, greasy; flesh pale cream,
quite sharp, juicy, flavour pleasant; cooking quality - keeps shape,
also used for juice; high vigour, spreading, heavy cropper; Blenheim
Orange x Newton Wonder. From Isle of Wight, UK, 1915. Ripens early
October, partially self-fertile, blooms Day 12.
