Group;

Thanks for the info on blackberries & deer.
Looks like I will have to do my fencing sooner than I wanted to.

RANT:

The state of WV stocks all of these deer in our area for to attract hunters to the state, to hunt on our private lands.  The only thing anybody gets out of it; is that a few convenience stores get to sell a few more soda pops and balony sandwitches to the hunters.  They probably don't make a extra $20 per week off of the hunters.  Yet it costs the land-owners 1000's of $ dollars in damages & work due to deer damage.

..... every year the local TV News shows make a big deal about all the extra money the deer hunters bring into the state economy.  This is bullshit to justify the deer stocking program.  The News shows never mention the $ amount of the damages the deer do to local land-owners....... or car owners.

Also; 2 yrs ago the deer heard around here died out, due to the mad cow disease epidemic, brain disease (they call it by another name to hide the mad cow name).  The WV DNR told the residents & hunters to go ahead and eat the deer, ..... just don't eat the brain tissue.   How sick, and corrupt, can you get ????

thanks for the help,

Without deer fencing you won't be growing blackberries of the thornless sort.....they eat everything here with leaves

Subject: [NAFEX] blackberry plants and deer

 Hi;
I have bot 25 blackberry bare-root plants last fall, and have them
heeled-in
the soil to plant in a new garden area in March or April. They are all
thornless varieties: Arapaho, Navaho, Ouichita, Triple crown, Apache,
Chester.

I am going to plant them in a old hayfield, that is not yet fenced in.
[against deer. ]

My question is: Will the deer damage the thornless blackberry plants ?
i.e.: Do deer like to eat thornless blackberry plants ? Should I fence
in
the blackberry patch before I do the planting of the b.b. plants ?

Also; do I have to worry about field mice girdling the b.b. plants
lower
stems ??? Should I put plastic, or duct tape, around the lower stems
to
protect them from being girdled by the field mice ??
                    thanks for any help,
                                        dan in WVa, usda zone 6.
