Alan,
I've never used one personally, but a contractor friend augered planting holes for about 50 small seedlings of native tree species I'd grown out for a 'nature trail' planting at my kids' elementary school several years back. He had a 12" auger mounted on a skid-steer loader.
Depending upon your soil type and moisture level, you may need to do some post-augering re-dressing of the walls of your holes. In wet clay soils, an auger may cause 'glazing' of the walls - you'd need to 'rough-up' those smooth walls to diminish the likelihood of roots meeting a smooth, compacted layer of clay at that wall surface and failing to migrate out into adjacent soil.

I have been considering the use of a gas-powered auger for digging holes in

someone here has experience with this device and might comment on such
things as its efficiency vs other means, ease of use, auger diameter to
choose for this job and any potential problems to bear in mind.
Thanks.
