RE: Ribes in shade
According to research by Martin Crawford at the Agroforestry Research
Trust Forest Garden in the UK, Gooseberries and Currants showed no
statistically significant drop in production when grown in up to 40
percent shade. (reference from Edible Forest Gardens Vol. I by Dave
Jacke and Eric Toensmeier, p. 78). I would say some drop in production
could be expected with over 40% shade, but it might just be worth a
shot for currants...
Cheers

I'm sorry I can't currently supply full latin names, but in WI two species
of Aronia are recommended for landscaping. One is more shade-tolerant,
often rated for shade. I've seen it in both shade and sun, and there's no
comparison: it's definitely a sun plant! I also have to wonder about
currants in the shade being expected to produce fruit-- not practical?
